No one can stop Sebastian Vettel.
That’s what the betting market indicates anyway, with online bookmaker Sportsbet opening Vettel as the $2.00 favourite to win the 2014 championship.

Unsurprisingly, Vettel has already attracted 95% of betting in the market, with Lewis Hamilton the next best backed at $5.50.

Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo is considered a $21 chance, with Fernando Alonso ($6.00), Kimi Raikkonen ($7.50) and Jenson Button ($15) also amongst the top hopes.

“Punters are already considering it a fairly safe bet that Vettel will be the man to beat again. We haven’t seen a person dominate a market this early for quite some time,” said Sportsbet Australia’s Shaun Anderson.

They may have had a stressful start to their campaign but Australia remain firm favourites to win the Rugby League World Cup, firming from $1.38 to $1.33 with online bookmaker Sportsbet.

Despite being pushed by England in game one, punters have continued to back the Kangaroos, although there has also been good support for New Zealand who are next in the market at $4.00.

After their courageous showing against Australia, England remain the only other team given a real shot at $8.00, with every other team in triple digits of $101 or more.

Shamus Award, a $101 shot with Sportingbet Australia immediately following the barrier draw on Tuesday, has become the first maiden to win the Sportingbet Cox Plate.

 

The Danny O’Brien trained three-year-old firmed into $61 following the shock scratching of pre-post favourite Atlantic Jewel, and was steadily backed throughout the week before starting at $21.

 

“He might have created history by becoming the first maiden to win the race but punters didn’t miss him,” Sportingbet’s Andrew Brown said.

 

“Since we’ve been betting on the race, there’s never been a horse at $101 after the final field was declared that’s gone on and won,” Brown said.

 

“Shamas Award was one of the best backed horses during the week and punters crunched him late,” Brown said.

 

“It’s fair to say this has been one of the biggest long-shot plunges we’ve ever seen in a Cox Plate,”

Punters are looking for value in tomorrow’s Sportingbet Cox Plate with the top three favourites in betting all big drifters at Sportingbet.

 

Favourite It’s A Dundeel has eased from $4 out to $4.4, Puissance De Lune $4.2 out to $5 and Fiorente $4.2 out to $6.50.

 

“The punters have shunned the big three, it’s amazing to think that It’s a Dundeel is now the same price as when Atlantic Jewel was in the race and Fiorente is a better price, its crazy,” Sportingbet’s Michael Felgate said

 

Prior Atlantic Jewel’s scratching on Tuesday, It’s a Dundeel was $4.40 (now $4.40), Puissance De Lune $6 (now $5) and Fiorente $6 (now $6.50).

 

“Punters are clearly looking for value with a number of big moves all at double-figure odds,” Felgate said.

 

Three-year olds, Long John and Shamus Award have both been heavily supported.

 

“Long John has been backed from $10 into $7 and could start shorter than Fiorente, he has been best backed of the favoured runners.”

 

“Shamus Award has been a huge go and is our worst result. He was $81 after the barrier draw and is now a $21 chance, the money has been constant,” Felgate said.

 

International galloper Mull Of Killough has also been well backed firming from $81 on Tuesday to $31.

 

“Mull Of Killough has been an international plunge, we were hit heavily overnight with a number of bets at the same time as the UK bookies were also hit,” Felgate said.

International horse Mull Of Killough has been the subject of a massive dual-hemisphere plunge to win Saturday’s Group 1 Sportingbet Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.

 

Trained by Australian expatriate Jane Chapple-Hyam, the eight-year-old’s odds of winning Australia’s weight for age classic have been slashed from $81 into $31 at Sportingbet after a high volume of bets.

 

“They just kept nibbling away at him at the big odds and we’re still writing plenty of tickets at the $31,” Sportingbet’s Andrew Brown said.

 

“Our UK parent William Hill has also been smashed with bets, forcing them to cut his odds from 50/1 into 20/1,” Brown said.

 

Chapple-Hyam has been comparing her horse favourably to former international Fiorente, a drifting $6  third favourite now trained by Gai Waterhouse.

 

In other market moves, Puissance De Lune has also drifted from $4.20 out to $5. Long John has firmed from $10 into $7 while Happy Trails ($16 to $13) and Foreteller ($31 into $26) continue to attract support.

A heavy stream of support has helped Kiwi champion It’s A Dundeel knock Puissance De Lune from the top of Cox Plate betting with online bookmaker Sportsbet.

Sportsbet Australia reports It’s A Dundeel has received three-times the support than any other runner and as a result the Kiwi has firmed from $4.40 into $4.20 favourite with Puissance De Lune easing from $4.00 to $4.50.

“With the prospect of a wet track likely the punters are really rallying towards the It’s A Dundeel. The money for the Kiwi has been constant over the last 24 hours,” Ben Hawes said.

Outside of the top two, one time favourite Fiorente ($5.50 out to $6.00), Long John ($7.00 into $6.50) and Happy Trails ($15 into $14) have also received some backing.

Sportsbet will refund losing bets on any horse who finishes second or third in the Cox Plate!

Meanwhile, Savvy Nature could cement Victoria Derby favouritism if he can win the Vase at Moonee Valley.

The Gai Waterhouse trained Ecuador continues to be heavily backed at Sportingbet to win Saturday’s Group 1 Epsom Handicap at Randwick.

 

A $15 chance prior to Wednesday’s barrier draw, punters have since slashed the four-year-old gelding’s odds into just $7 at Sportingbet.

News Lance Franklin is expected to sign with the Swans has sent Sydney fans into a frenzy with punters unloading on them to win the 2014 premiership.
